Press release - People’s Party of Canada Reaffirms Opposition to Bill C-4 and Gender Ideology Targeting Children

February 5, 2026

Ottawa, ON, February 5, 2026 — The People’s Party of Canada (PPC) is reaffirming its long-standing opposition to radical gender ideology and legislation that harms children, following recent votes by the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) and public discussion surrounding them.

Bill C-4, passed with unanimous support from all members of Parliament, including Conservatives, introduced an overly broad definition of “conversion therapy” that created a chilling effect on parents and professionals who encourage children to accept their biological sex. The law made it illegal to treat children for a mental disorder, but legal to encourage them to undergo “gender affirming therapy” and mutilate their body.

At the CPC’s recent national convention, delegates considered a motion that would have signalled a reversal or clarification of the party’s previous support for Bill C-4. That motion was defeated, confirming that the Conservatives have chosen not to distance themselves from their earlier position.

“The Conservatives had an opportunity to clearly step back from Bill C-4, and they chose not to,” said PPC leader Maxime Bernier. “That choice has real consequences for children, and Canadians deserve clarity about where parties stand.”

The PPC has also raised concerns about how political parties can become insulated from accountability in today’s media environment. Large online platforms and personalities increasingly shape how party votes and policy decisions are understood by the public.

The PPC emphasizes that its criticism is directed at political influence and policy outcomes — not personal character — and that accountability applies wherever political power and influence are exercised.

“When online influencers excuse or obscure policy decisions, it matters,” Bernier added. “Especially when laws impose nefarious ideologies and expose children to harm.”

The People’s Party of Canada’s position is clear:

  • Biological sex is real and immutable;
  • Children should be taught self-acceptance, not that they are born in the wrong body;
  • The state should not criminalize open discussion or non-ideological guidance;
  • Gender ideology has no place in law, education, or medicine.

The PPC remains the only federal party to have opposed Bill C-4 from the outset and to consistently challenge the imposition of gender ideology through federal law.
