The People's Party of Canada ("PPC", "the Party", "we", "us", or "our") is committed to respecting your privacy and protecting the personal information that members, donors, volunteers, supporters, electors, candidates, and visitors share with us or that otherwise comes under our control.
This policy explains what personal information we collect, how we collect and use it, how we protect it, the circumstances in which we may disclose it, and the rights and choices you have in relation to it.
This policy is published in accordance with section 446.6 of the Canada Elections Act.
In accordance with the Canada Elections Act, the PPC has designated a Privacy Officer who is responsible for overseeing the Party's compliance with this policy.
You can reach our Privacy Officer with any questions, concerns, or complaints regarding this policy or our handling of your personal information:
The Privacy Officer, or a delegate of the Privacy Officer, will attend at least one meeting in each calendar year relating to the protection of personal information held by the Chief Electoral Officer, as required by the Canada Elections Act.
"Personal information" means information about an identifiable individual. For the PPC, this typically includes your contact information, such as your name, postal address, email address, and telephone number, as well as other information you provide to us or that we receive in connection with your membership, contributions, volunteer activities, electoral participation, candidacy, or other interactions with the Party.
Depending on how you interact with us, we may collect:
● Contact information, including name, postal address, email address, and telephone number;
● Membership information, including date of joining, riding or electoral district, and renewal history;
● Donation information, including donation amount and date and payment method details processed by our payment processor;
● Volunteer information, including skills, availability, areas of interest, and role assignments;
● Candidate and nomination information where you are seeking, or have sought, a candidacy or nomination;
● Engagement information, including events attended, petitions signed, surveys completed, and content to which you have responded;
● Electoral information provided to us under the Canada Elections Act, including names, addresses, and unique identifiers from lists of electors; and
● Technical and online information, including IP address, browser type, pages visited, cookies, and similar information collected automatically when you visit our website.
We collect personal information in a number of ways. The examples below illustrate the most common situations:
Each year, and during a general election, Elections Canada provides registered political parties with lists of electors containing the names, addresses, and a unique identifier for each elector in the electoral districts where the Party endorses candidates. We use this information solely for electoral purposes, including communicating with electors and encouraging participation in the electoral process. We do not sell this information or use it for any commercial purpose.
When you sign up as a member of the PPC through our website or by mail, we collect your name, address, email, telephone number, date of birth, citizenship status, and payment information. We use this information to manage your membership, send you communications about Party activities, and confirm your eligibility under the Canada Elections Act.
When you donate, we collect your name, contact information, and payment details. Payment details are processed by our payment processor; the Party itself stores only limited card information such as the last four digits, card brand, and authorization confirmation. Where required by the Canada Elections Act, contribution information is reported to Elections Canada and certain information concerning contributions is made publicly available.
When you offer to volunteer with the Party or with an Electoral District Association, we collect the information needed to assign you to suitable activities - for example, your name, contact details, riding, areas of interest, and availability.
If you sign a petition or take action through one of our online tools, we collect the information you provide, such as your name, postal code, and email address, along with a record of the action you took. We use this information to acknowledge your participation, send you updates about the campaign in question, and, where you consent, send you broader Party communications.
When you visit peoplespartyofcanada.ca or partipopulaireducanada.ca, our servers automatically record limited technical information such as your IP address, browser type, the pages you visit, and the time and duration of your visit. We use this information to improve the performance and security of our website.
The website also uses cookies - small text files placed on your device - for purposes such as remembering your language preference, keeping track of your session if you are logged in, and measuring the effectiveness of our outreach campaigns. You may set your browser to refuse cookies or to alert you when cookies are being used; however, some features of the website may not work properly if cookies are disabled.
When you register for a PPC event, we collect the information necessary to manage the event, such as your name, contact information, and any accessibility or dietary requirements you choose to share with us.
When you contact the Party by email, telephone, mail, or social media, we collect the information you choose to provide so that we can respond to you.
We use the personal information we collect to:
● Communicate with members, donors, volunteers, supporters, and electors about the activities and positions of the Party;
● Process and acknowledge donations and memberships and meet our reporting obligations under the Canada Elections Act;
● Coordinate volunteer activities and event participation;
● Encourage participation in the electoral process and solicit votes for candidates endorsed by the Party;
● Conduct outreach, surveys, and political research to inform Party communications, positions, and campaigns;
● Operate, maintain, secure, and improve our website and digital tools; and
● Comply with applicable law.
We will not use your personal information for purposes other than those described in this policy without your consent, except where permitted or required by law.
Neither the PPC nor any person or entity acting on its behalf will provide false or misleading information to individuals about the purposes for which the Party collects personal information.
The PPC is a national organization with a riding-based membership system. Your information may be shared internally between the national Party, Electoral District Associations, candidates, officers, agents, employees, authorized volunteers, representatives, and other persons acting on the Party's behalf, where necessary for authorized Party purposes and in accordance with this policy.
We may transfer personal information to third-party service providers that perform services on our behalf. These may include payment processors, email service providers, customer relationship management (CRM) platforms, hosting providers, communications platforms, and mass mailing or telephone outreach services.
When personal information is transferred to another person or entity, the PPC requires, by contract or otherwise, that the recipient provide a level of protection for the personal information equivalent to the level of protection the PPC is required to provide under this policy.
Depending on the nature of the service and the information involved, these protections may include requirements concerning:
● Appropriate physical, organizational, and technological security safeguards;
● Limiting access to personal information to authorized persons who require access for the agreed purpose;
● Limiting the collection, use, disclosure, copying, and retention of the information to authorized purposes;
● Protecting information against unauthorized access, use, disclosure, alteration, loss, or destruction;
● Promptly informing the PPC of an actual or suspected security or privacy breach affecting personal information transferred by the PPC;
● Cooperating with the PPC in investigating and responding to a breach;
● Returning or securely destroying personal information when it is no longer required, where appropriate; and
● Ensuring that persons acting for the service provider and having access to the information are subject to appropriate confidentiality and security obligations.
We may also share personal information with Elections Canada and the Commissioner of Canada Elections as required by the Canada Elections Act, and otherwise where we are legally required or authorized to do so.
The PPC, and any person or entity acting on the PPC's behalf - including its candidates, Electoral District Associations, officers, agents, employees, volunteers, representatives, contractors, and service providers - are prohibited from selling personal information under the Party's control.
We take the security of personal information under our control seriously.
The PPC protects personal information under its control through physical, organizational, and technological security safeguards with a level of protection proportionate to the sensitivity of the personal information.
These safeguards may include:
● Access controls and role-based permissions;
● Restricting access to personal information to persons who require it for authorized Party purposes;
● Encryption of data in transit;
● Secure password and authentication practices;
● Secure handling and storage of paper and electronic records;
● Training and confidentiality requirements for individuals who have access to Party information;
● Security requirements for third-party service providers; and
● Periodic reviews of our security arrangements.
The safeguards applied to particular information may vary according to factors such as the sensitivity, amount, format, location, and method of storage of the information.
No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure. While we work to protect personal information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
The PPC takes appropriate steps when personal information under its control is lost, accessed without authorization, or disclosed without authorization as a result of a breach of our security safeguards.
When we become aware of an actual or suspected breach, appropriate steps may include:
● Taking immediate measures, where possible, to contain the breach and prevent further unauthorized access, disclosure, or loss;
● Informing the Privacy Officer and other appropriate Party personnel;
● Investigating the circumstances, nature, and scope of the breach;
● Identifying the personal information and individuals affected;
● Taking appropriate measures to recover information or reduce the possibility of misuse;
● Addressing security weaknesses that contributed to the breach;
● Working with affected third-party service providers or other organizations where applicable; and
● Determining whether affected individuals should be notified.
Where it is reasonable in the circumstances to believe that a breach creates a real risk of significant harm to an individual, the PPC will, as soon as feasible, inform the individual whose personal information has been lost, accessed without authorization, or disclosed without authorization.
In determining whether a breach of security safeguards creates a real risk of significant harm to an individual, the PPC will consider the factors required by the Canada Elections Act, including:
1. The sensitivity of the personal information involved in the breach; and
2. The probability that the personal information has been, is being, or will be misused.
Where notification is required, the PPC will provide information reasonably necessary to allow the affected individual to understand the significance of the breach and, where appropriate, take steps to reduce the risk of harm.
The PPC provides training on the protection of personal information to employees, contractors, Electoral District Association officers, and volunteers who may have access to personal information under the Party's control. This training is provided at onboarding and is refreshed periodically. It includes:
● A review of this Privacy Policy and the obligations it places on individuals acting on the Party's behalf;
● Canada Elections Act requirements relating to the protection of personal information, including rules governing the use of lists of electors provided by Elections Canada;
● Practical guidance on access controls, password security, secure handling of paper and electronic records, and reporting suspected privacy incidents to the Privacy Officer;
● Restrictions on the use, copying, or sharing of Party data outside authorized Party purposes; and
● The prohibitions set out in Section 10 of this policy.
Individuals with access to Party data are required to acknowledge their understanding of, and agreement to comply with, this Privacy Policy.
The PPC, as well as any person or entity acting on the Party's behalf, including the Party's candidates, Electoral District Associations, officers, agents, employees, volunteers, representatives, contractors, and service providers, is prohibited from:
1. Providing false or misleading information to individuals about the purposes for which the Party collects personal information;
2. Selling personal information under the Party's control; or
3. Disclosing personal information under the Party's control to the public for the purpose of causing harm.
These prohibitions apply to personal information under the Party's control regardless of the form in which the information is held.
You may update or correct the personal information we hold about you by emailing info@peoplespartyofcanada.ca or by contacting our Privacy Officer using the contact information in Section 1.
You may unsubscribe from our email communications at any time by clicking the "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of an email we send you or by emailing info@peoplespartyofcanada.ca. If you wish to be added to our internal Do-Not-Call list, please let us know by email.
You may direct any question, concern, or complaint about this policy or our handling of your personal information to our Privacy Officer using the contact information in Section 1.
The PPC's activities are not directed at children. Party membership is available only to individuals who are 14 years of age or older, in accordance with our internal rules. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 14 without the consent of a parent or guardian.
The PPC may update this policy from time to time, including to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. The current version of this policy is always available at peoplespartyofcanada.ca in English and partipopulaireducanada.ca in French. Any material updates will be communicated through our website or other reasonable means.
