Ottawa, ON, August 12, 2025 — The People’s Party of Canada unveiled a new policy in its platform to address the issue of the relentless trend toward centralization of power in Ottawa, and the federal government’s encroachment on provincial jurisdictions.
The policy, titled “Federalism: Ending Imperial Federalism and Restoring Provincial Autonomy,” is available on the party’s website.
If it forms the government, the PPC commits to:
-abolish all federal programs and regulations intruding on areas of provincial responsibility;
-repeal the Canada Health Act and replace Health Transfers with tax points of equivalent value; and
-substantially reduce total equalization payments and reform the equalization formula.
The party also says that:
“the only way to bring about meaningful change under the current government may be to take advantage of the constitutional crisis that would follow a majority vote in favour of secession in a provincial referendum.
For this reason, the PPC will support the YES side if a referendum takes place in Quebec or Alberta in the coming years in order to break the stranglehold of imperial federalism and pave the way for a last-ditch attempt at rebalancing our federation."
In a message sent to PPC members and supporters, leader Maxime Bernier explained that he voted YES in the 1995 Quebec referendum, “not because I wanted to break up Canada. But because I believed it was the only way to stop the relentless movement of centralisation of power in Ottawa.”
And yet,
“(t)he NO side ended up winning in 1995 and despite all the promises of reforms by Ottawa, nothing changed. On the contrary, the Liberals have since created more unconstitutional national programs that intrude on provincial powers.
I decided to go into politics in 2006 to help fix this. But Harper did nothing to reverse the trend. And Poilievre said he will keep all of Trudeau’s new unconstitutional programs. We can’t expect any real change from either the Liberals or the Conservatives.”
