Press release - Maxime Bernier Will Attend Court Case in Winnipeg to Support PPC Member’s Fight Against Arbitrary Covid Ticket

May 27, 2024

Ottawa, ON, May 27, 2024 — Theleader of the People’s Party of Canada, Maxime Bernier, will be in Winnipeg on Wednesday to attend the court case of local resident Todd Dube, who is fighting a $1300ticket for attending a PPC rally during the pandemic.

Mr. Dubewas present with hundreds of other PPC supporters and opponents of covidlockdowns at an event on June 12th 2021 at the Forks, where Maxime Bernier wassupposed to be speaking. However, the PPC leader ended up not attending, havingbeen arrested and put in jail for 12 hours the day before, and told to promptlyleave the province, because he met a dozen supporters in a park.

Mr. Dubewill be arguing that the law was enforced arbitrarily and that his ticket wasan instance of political persecution. He says he attended the Black Lives Matter rally withthousands of people at the Legislative building (standing right beside former Chiefof Police Devon Clunis) during the period when the same outdoor gathering restrictionsapplied, when no enforcement was present. There were also a very large Sikhsfor Farmers rally and a Nurses rally during the same period, again with noenforcement of the mandate.

“However when I went to hear Max Bernier speak, therewere eight enforcement officers on the rooftop with telescopic lenses toidentify and charge the people gathering. I will not stand for politicalpersecution in Canada. Therefore I will stand and plead ‘not guilty’ to theManitoba government’s targeted enforcement of its baseless restrictions,” saidTodd Dube, who is a founding member of the People's Party.

“Not onlywere these covid mandates useless, awful examples of authoritarian measures, and, in my opinion, unconstitutional. But they were also enforced arbitrarilyand disproportionately targeted political opponents like me and PPCsupporters,” says Bernier. “It’s no coincidence that other, politically correctprotests were not targeted, while ours were. There is no real political freedomif we don’t have freedom of assembly and freedom to protest authoritarianmeasures. I’m proud to be in Winnipeg to support Todd.”

Bernier, Dube, and hislawyer Kyle Morgan will address the media and answer questions at the entranceof the Winnipeg Courthouse at 9:30 am, just before the start of the courthearing at 10:00.
