Kirk Hansen is a seasoned professional with a rich career in information technology and a deep commitment to leadership and strategic planning. Born in Ottawa in 1947, he grew up in a family engaged in both the community and the United Church. His education led him to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Carleton University (1968) and a Master’s from the University of Toronto (1969).
He began his career in 1970 at Manulife Financial, working in data processing and IT innovation. In 2002, he transitioned to IBM as an Executive Consultant, where he contributed to the development of computing-related standards and strategic initiatives until his retirement in 2009. Even after leaving the corporate world, he remained active in the field, dedicating time to technology standards development while indulging his passion for history.
Kirk has always valued intellectual curiosity and lifelong learning. In 1977, he took a year-long sabbatical to travel the world, an experience that broadened his perspective on global affairs. In 1979, he married Mary-Anne Sillamaa, an economist and university professor, and together they built a life centered on education and public service. Their son pursued a career in science and now lives abroad with his family.
